You're fine to downshift even with a CVT. Don't overcompensate and drop it too low, but that said it's likely managed by the computer that you can't do catastrophic shifts, as it's all drive by wire, so if the computer says no to a downshift to 2 while doing 75, then it will obey the computer and not your input.
Can CVT downshift?
Since there are no gears to upshift or downshift through, a CVT transmission will feel smoother in all driving situations, even when driving up steep hills. In essence, it's like having a single gear that goes up and down the RPM, range instead of having gear for the engine to “step down” to with every gear shift. What can you not do with a CVT transmission?
Since you are an avid car lover, you do not have to love CVT, but at least know how to deal with them.
- Don't put a CVT car in neutral to stop. ...
- Don't hold on a hill with the throttle. ...
- Don't coast in neutral. ...
- Don't neutrally drop a CVT car. ...
- Don't change direction without coming to a stop.
Can you manually shift a CVT transmission?
Some have “manual mode,” where the driver can use the shift lever or paddles on the steering wheel to move up or down the gears as in a manual transmission, but without a clutch. How do you drive a CVT downhill?
If you wish to do engine braking in a CVT, lift off the accelerator, use the foot brake to slow the car down first, and then and “shift down” in to “S”. Use engine braking to help you coast. For more control on slow steep descents, you may even shift to “L”.5 Things You Should Never Do In A CVT Vehicle
Is CVT good for uphill?
So when on an uphill incline, just hold on the brakes instead. Because the nature of CVTs, putting the pedal-to-the-metal starting from a low RPM is perfectly fine. The car, its computer, and transmission will all adjust accordingly. How do I change gears on a CVT?
Since there are no gears to shift, a CVT doesn't come with a manual override. Instead, it gets steps which can be altered via paddle-shifters to better harness the torque. However, not all CVT-equipped cars come with paddle-shifters.Can you redline a CVT?
It won't go to redline and shift gear. Likewise, it will constantly stay at max power RPM because that's the fastest way it can accelerate. This is what causes the CVTs to be so efficient. They can constantly use the engine as efficiently as they can.Is it bad to use manual mode on a CVT transmission?
You absolutely can with nothing to worry about. These modern automatic transmissions that have a manual mode are meant to do that. Switching to manual mode from automatic, even while cruising, is something that it was built to do. In the past decade or so, the automatic transmission has undergone a few advancements. How can I accelerate my CVT fast?
Keep it smooth and steady when accelerating. Don't step and release, but just smoothly glide down into the lower levels of the accelerator, and you might not feel it, but you will go faster even with some input on the accelerator pedal. Also keep in mind that the transmission will do the work for you.How do you ruin a CVT transmission?
