Physical ExaminationThe duodenal or proximal small bowel has less distention when obstructed than the distal bowel has when obstructed. Hyperactive bowel sounds occur early as gastrointestinal (GI) contents attempt to overcome the obstruction; hypoactive bowel sounds occur later in the disease process.
What are the signs and symptoms of small bowel obstruction?
Signs and symptoms of intestinal obstruction include:
- Crampy abdominal pain that comes and goes.
- Loss of appetite.
- Constipation.
- Vomiting.
- Inability to have a bowel movement or pass gas.
- Swelling of the abdomen.
