When thinning your water-based or latex paints, use half a cup of water and mix thoroughly. If you have added too much water and the paint just runs out, it is too thin, and you will not be able to use this. You will need to slowly add some paint into your paint bucket, start with half a cup of paint.
What do you add to water-based paint to thin it out?
Pour all of the paint from the can into a clean five-gallon bucket, and add a half-cup of room temperature water for every one gallon of paint. Then thoroughly combine the paint and water with a stir stick, using a combination of upward and downward spiral motions. Is it OK to dilute water-based paint?
Diluting paint can improve paint flow but should be done sparingly. Over-diluting water-based paint reduces its ability to cover flaws and adhere to a surface. Water dries at a slower rate than paint and can alter the drying time specified on the product label. Can you add water to thick water-based paint?
Tip. Go slowly and be careful when adding water because this is only a one-way process: You can always add more water to paint to further thin it out but you cannot thicken the paint again. The best way to save paint that is too thin is to add it to a second can of paint. Can you add water to old water-based paint?
Just add water!Since latex paint is water-based, try adding water before anything else! Add the water in 1 or 2 ounce increments and use the same stirring techniques that were suggested above. Continue adding water slowly and keep doing so until the consistency is what you are looking for.
